EMD SD70MAC

SD70MAC by USA Trains
The General Motors Electro-Motive Divison (EMD) began production of the SD70 diesel electric series in 1992. The SD70MAC model incorporated a wide nose and comfort cab as opposed to the spartan cab of the SD70.
The majority of the SD70MACs were powered by the 4,000 horsepower EMD 710 prime mover. The MAC model of the SD70 series utilizes AC traction motors as opposed to the DC motors of the SD70, SD70M, SD70I and SD70M-2 models. Unfortunately the draw back to the simpler and more reliable AC motors are the much more expensive inverters needed to produce the variable frequency AC signal. Due to EPA regluations, the SD70MAC has been replaced by the SD70ACe and is no longer produced.
