GE GENESISThe GE Transportation Systems GENESIS line of diesel electric locomotives is widely used by both the U.S. Amtrak and Canadian VIA Rail lines in North America. It is safe to say that the Nathan 5KLA horn used by Amtrak, heard here, is one of the most recognizable in America. Since 1992, the GENESIS series has been comprised of three models: the P40, P42 and P32 - all using DC traction motors. The P40, also known as the AMD-103, was in production between 1992 and 1997 when it was replaced by the P42. The significant difference in these models was the increase from 4,000hp to 4,200hp produced by the prime mover. The P32 is a unique 'dual mode' locomotive which sees restricted duty, hauling trains entering and leaving New York City and is seen almost exclusively on Amtrak's Emprire Service and the Metro-North Railroad. |
